Part of the Afro Hair Series, this interactive piece explores the boundaries, beauty standards and assumptions placed upon the Afro.

Constructed entirely from a recycled Loop Colour spray-can box, the Afro deliberately references the idea of being expected to fit inside a box when its natural form is already enough.

The removable hand, held in place by hidden magnets, can be positioned in two locations or exhibited separately. It invites the viewer to consider the act of reaching towards, touching or handling an Afro that does not belong to them.

At its heart, the work asks: Why do people feel entitled to touch what they have not been invited to touched?

The opening party for In The Loop WAS AT Atom Gallery on thursday 17 September, 6pm-9pm

In The Loop, 18 September - 3 October 2026 curated by Jane Mutiny & Lee HD at Atom Gallery, London.

If you use spray paint, you'll know Loop - the cans come in boxes of four.

A white Loop spray paint box next to a silver Loop spray can, with a hand-drawn arrow labelled "this guy" pointing at the box. To the right, a line diagram shows the box flattened out, with approximate measurements of 605mm tall by 272mm wide.

Like a lot of artists, Jane and Lee had been thinking about the waste their materials leave behind, and those empty boxes seemed like a good place to start. For In the Loop, each one is flattened out and handed over to an artist as a canvas.

“We all struggle to keep up with recycling and reducing our waste. As artists we are aware of our environmental footprint with our materials. What about all that stuff that’s just thrown away? Can’t we make something out of it? So we thought, how about taking a very normal material - a cardboard box - and turn it into a piece of beautiful art? Why not!” - Jane Mutiny, co-curator of In The Loop

The show builds on Queens of the Wall, curated by Jane Mutiny at Copeland Park, Peckham in 2024.
