"HMMMM." Mixed Media on Loop Spray Paint Box by Holly Oluwo

Part of the Afro Hair Series, this interactive piece explores the boundaries, beauty standards and assumptions placed upon the Afro.

Constructed entirely from a recycled Loop Colour spray-can box, the Afro deliberately references the idea of being expected to fit inside a box when its natural form is already enough.

The removable hand, held in place by hidden magnets, can be positioned in two locations or exhibited separately. It invites the viewer to consider the act of reaching towards, touching or handling an Afro that does not belong to them.

At its heart, the work asks: Why do people feel entitled to touch what they have not been invited to touched?
