This work is inspired by the ordinary, disposable nature of Loop's cardboard packaging and wanted to challenge the idea that an object loses its value once it has fulfilled its original purpose. Instead of hiding the box’s folds, creases, cut-outs and imperfections, Hells Gibson kept them visible so that its previous life remains a part of the work.
“My signature pink and gold are deliberately bold and glamorous. They contrast with cardboard, which is normally seen as cheap, temporary and mundane. Gold is particularly associated with wealth and value, so applying it to a discarded material creates an intentional contradiction: something considered worthless is literally being given the appearance of value.”
The box itself becomes the “trash” that has been rediscovered as “treasure.”
