This work came out of a lighter moment Bec had after a run of disappointments. The artist is interested in esoteric subjects like astrology and has been intrigued by 2026 being the year of the Fire Horse. The disappointments didn’t seem to align with the promise of a year of intense forward motion under such a sign. While pondering that, Bec mused on how futile it would be to actually try to control a Fire Horse.
When it comes to making, Bec always starts by muddling through concepts, visuals and connections in a sketchbook. Meanwhile, the box was primed with a couple of coats of gesso, and once the concept felt solid, the idea was sketched and then painted straight onto the surface.
