In this work, Mr Edwards portrays Michael Caine as Harry Palmer in The Ipcress File (1965). Len Deighton’s unwilling spy is an insubordinate ex-grammar school boy, and the opposite of the polished, public-school James Bond. For Mr Edwards, Caine captured the working-class hero of the swinging sixties: “the original hard man with glasses.”
