Four Seasons: Constant Within Chaos encapsulates the contrast between the rapidly changing, unpredictable external world and the dependable cycles of nature. Four trees represent the seasons: a cherry blossom tree for spring, an oak tree for summer, a silver birch for autumn and a barren tree for winter – a continuous annual cycle of growth, abundance, change and rest. The exterior represents noise, movement and disorder, in contrast to the quieter and more consistent natural rhythm. The work reflects on how nature continues its cycles even when the world around it feels chaotic and uncertain.
Alanis K was inspired by the iPlayer drama The Girl Before, in which the house is one of the main characters. Its 'garden' had just one tree, similar to the autumn tree, and in the life before, just one tree similar to the cherry blossom. The house, or 'box', represents the inner world in contrast to the external chaos.
The artist kept the original structure of the box, opened one side to paint the inside and place the trees, then resealed it. The trees were made from box material (plus an extra box) that was cut, stripped, coloured in with pencils and glued together. The inside is painted half black, half white for an uncluttered feel with no distractions. The box can be viewed from above or through the slits, and the display changes depending on how much light or sun shines through.
