Named after the Japanese island and flying the rising sun flag, Okinawa Red is one of the women of Blake’s 2017 Wrestlers set, with a mane of copper-red hair, a pale face and dark, smoky eyes. Blake made his first wrestler pictures in 1961, taking publicity photos from sports magazines and inventing a heroic life story for each fighter. More than fifty years later he’s still at it, mixing real and invented details and borrowing celebrity features to hint at each wrestler’s fame.
Women wrestlers hold a special place in Blake’s work. His 2015 exhibition Portraits and People included a series of female wrestlers, both glamorous and tough, which echo his earlier pin-up paintings.
