“Krankie the Klown” from the Wrestlers Set, Limited Edition Screenprint by Sir Peter Blake
Blake has loved wrestling since childhood, drawn to what he calls “the theatre, the fantasy and the idea of good versus evil.” Krankie the Klown is all theatre: white greasepaint, a white skullcap and a bright red nose, staring out from a black background with the French tricolour beneath his name. He first appeared as a watercolour in Blake’s 2015 exhibition Portraits and People, among ten new wrestlers invented for the show.
Krankie brings together two worlds that run through Blake’s work: the wrestling ring and the circus sideshow.
