Sir Peter Blake has said that if he hadn’t become an artist, he would have tried his luck as a professional wrestler. Considerate Boy is one of ten fictional fighters Blake invented for Portraits and People, his 2015 exhibition at Waddington Custot, later published as this 2017 set of screenprints. He wears a rainbow-striped hood and a black wrestling vest, and fights under the Union Jack, with his name in bold poster type below. Like every wrestler in the set, he borrows features from famous faces, so he feels familiar without ever being named.
The polite name is a joke in a sport built on villains and bravado. It’s also a return to a subject Blake has painted since the early 1960s.
Silkscreen with glazes, signed by the artist. Edition of 50. Published by CCA Galleries and printed at Coriander Studios.
